A word from the Principal….
At Immaculate Conception Elementary School, students enter as dependent Third graders and leave as capable, independent Fifth graders. It is here that the students make the transition from learning to read, to reading to learn! We foster a true feeling of belonging with emphasis on Christian values, respect and school spirit. A diverse curriculum that ranges from Saxon mathematics to writing workshops with nationally recognized authors, is offered at all grade levels. Students are given a solid foundation in core academic subjects as well as receiving instruction in vocal and instrumental music, art, physical education and computers. A wide variety of extra curricular activities are offered including x-country, basketball, volleyball, track, Odyssey of the Mind, chess club, and choir. Child care services are provided before and after school through an enrichment program that is coordinated and staffed by Munson Hospital.
At Immaculate Conception, your children will begin to make connections to the world around them in a school environment that is safe and orderly. We believe in fostering an all-inclusive environment where no student is ever left out. A visual reminder of this philosophy is reflected on our playground banner “We Don’t Say You Can’t Play.” At Immaculate Conception, the most important rule is the Golden Rule.
My prayer is that you and your family will find this environment a wonderful place for your children to grow in faith and knowledge.
Sincerely Yours in Christ,
Matthew Bauman
Principal, Immaculate Conception Elementary
Weekly Mass
Weekly mass is celebrated every Wednesday morning at Immaculate Conception Parish. Each class takes turns planning the liturgy and participating in different aspects of mass, from reading, cantoring and choir, to servers and greeters. Every Monday morning, the week begins with a school-wide prayer service in the gym that reflects on Christian values, attitudes and service in addition to celebrating the different liturgical seasons.
Third Grade
These students are filled with excitement as they transition over to their new school and are eager to learn! They continue to receive foundational instruction in the fundamentals of language arts. They are given numerous opportunities for more independent writing in creative and unique ways. Students receive individual attention and support as they become more independent and begin to read for understanding across content areas. In mathematics, students expand upon previous material learned and are introduced to many new and advanced concepts.
Fourth Grade
The Fourth graders are immersed in Michigan history, geography and culture. They see interdisciplinary connections between science, mathematics and social students in both their school and life experiences. These connections are furthered through a diverse menu of activities ranging from trips aboard the school-ship to South Manitou Island and the Au Sable Institute. Each year, we invite Native American residents of the region, as well as other guests to visit and share their culture and experiences.
Fifth Grade
Fifth graders begin to embark on a year of independence and are given many opportunities to become involved in extra-curricular activities. They learn responsibility in school leadership and experience hands-on learning through role-playing a wide variety of scenarios in history and social studies. Students receive support from the GTACS Technology Coordinator and begin integrating technology with classroom instruction through the use of more advanced computer applications (including hand-helds) as well as additional access to the lab for research and projects. Students also have the opportunity to join the school band as well as the privilege of serving on the school's safety patrol. |
